If you're interested in listening to AM Radio Stations but don't have a traditional AM Radio Receiver, don't worry! There is an easy way to get the signal without the receiver! The first thing you will need is a tuner. A tuner takes an input signal and converts it into another frequency. Tuners are used by people who need to change the frequency of analog signals, like for TV stations or amateur radio operators. They're also good if you just want to see what's on the other side of the dial! You can buy them at any electronics store or order them online. There are many different types of tuners, but for our purposes all that really matters is that they are able to tune between 540 and 1610 MHz. After getting your tuner, plug it into the line-in port on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to use a USB audio device so you don't have to worry about what type of USB port your computer has. Then turn on the computer and open up your audio software. You can use any program that supports AIFF or WAV files, like Audacity or Sound Forge Pro. Playback the AM Stations file in this software until you find where you're receiving the stations (the highest frequencies). Save the file as WAV (or AIFF if you're using a Mac) and then convert it to mono.To decode all this information, start off with your computer's sound card. To do this, you will need a decoder. Since I'm using Windows XP I recommend using Winamp as an example for other platforms. The decoder will have a "decode" option so select it first and click "Apply." The next step is to find the AM Stations. Open up your WAV file in Sound Forge, select the part that you want to decode and save it as a WAV. Then open it back up and under "format" click "create". Select "WAV (mono)" and make sure the sample size is 16 bit and 44100 Hz. The window of where you will be putting these new stations will pop up, but we need to change the rate of the sound. This is because you're probably hearing them at a lower rate than they're actually playing on your tuner. To do this, just put -22.00 dB on each station. The new window will pop up with a bunch of indecipherable text, but if you go to the upper right-hand corner of the window under the tab it says "Data." This is where you can turn on and off individual stations. So scroll down and find a station that you want to hear, and then turn it on. You can do this for all of them if you feel like it! If you do this for an AM Radio Station, they will be played through your computer speakers at a higher quality! There may even be some extra stations coming in from Canada or Mexico so have fun exploring. cfa1e77820
