The Prambanan Temple complex is a site that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its foundations date to approximately the 8th century. The complex was constructed during the period of Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit in the 15th century. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the major tourist attractions in Indonesia, ranked as one of Indonesia's "seven wonders". Although both Prambanan and its neighboring temple complex at Candi Sukuh are sometimes referred to as a single site, they are separate sites that exist within a larger geographical area that is known as Prambanan. The Prambanan temple is located in Sumbermulyo Regency, about from Yogyakarta's city center. The temple complex is surrounded by a rectangular wall, which measures high and thick at its base. The well-preserved original main temple complex covers an area of . It measures north-south and east-west. The total extent of the site is approximately . The Prambanan temple complex incorporates both Hindu and Buddhist elements. It has Hindu statues, which are notable for their stylized features. These sculpted figures found in the park appear progressively younger south to north along the axis of the main road through the park. Amongst the various temples on site, archeologists have identified three main temples in the Prambanan complex. These are the Sosrowijayan Prambanan Temple, Lumbung Temple and Penataran Temple. Other temples within the site include Plaosan Temple I and Plaosan Temple II. The Sosrowijayan temple is located to the south of park's entrance, between Candi Gumpung and Candi Jago. This temple has a standing Buddha figure with elongated earlobes (characteristic of images from Central Java) with two large images of Shiva beneath him. The figure of the Buddha is made of laterite and the two images of Shiva are carved from soapstone. The temple is known as the family temple of Ngayogyavijaya and his wife Pikatan, and was built in the 14th century. This temple is an example of a Hindu mandala, where each gate has a structure associated with it to mark its cosmic position. The Lumbung Temple is located on the main road on the east side at about past Baturaden Gate. The temple has a four-story tower on its east side, which has ornately carved floral motifs on each story. cfa1e77820
